HOMEOWNERS EMERGENCY MORTGAGE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

I’m proud to be a supporter of The Homeowners Emergency Mortgage Assistance Program (HEMAP) administered by the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP). HEMAP is a means by which Long Island homeowners may receive gap mortgage payment assistance when they’ve suffered a hardship beyond their control. To qualify for a HEMAP loan, homeowners must attend Foreclosure Prevention Counseling, not be more than 12 months in arrears and be able to demonstrate they can resume making full mortgage payments and repay the HEMAP loan.

HEMAP is intended to offer short-term assistance for those who are suffering financial hardship due to circumstances beyond their control and render them unable to correct their delinquencies within a reasonable time period.

Howeowners who have fallen ill, were temporarily out of work due to the loss of a job, have experienced a loss or reduction in government benefits or have suffered the loss of a spouse, are the most typical profiles of individuals who may be helped by HEMAP. The program has also been expanded to include members of the armed forces who are on active duty so as to help families better adjust to the difficulties that wartime presents.

The program began in 2002 and is supplemented through a state grant that I secured. To date, several Long Island families have benefited from the program and have avoided the trauma of foreclosure.
